FacetWP A-Z Listing

FacetWP A-Z Listing is an official extension of the FacetWP ecosystem that adds a new alphabetical listing facet type to your WordPress site. Designed for sites with large volumes of content —directories, product catalogs, glossaries, member listings, or resource libraries— this tool allows visitors to filter results by the initial letter of a chosen data field, such as the post title, product name, or a custom field.

The extension displays a navigation bar with the letters from A to Z. When a letter is clicked, results are instantly filtered to show only items that begin with that letter. The user can reset the filter by clicking the selected letter again or using the "Any" link, which is also customizable and translatable via the facetwp_i18n hook.

One of its most notable features is intelligent character handling. The plugin automatically normalizes accents using WordPress's remove_accents() function, so posts starting with "n", "N", "ñ", or "Ñ" are indexed consistently and match when the corresponding letter is clicked. Additionally, the "#" character groups all results that start with numbers from 0 to 9, ensuring complete content coverage.

Since version 1.4, developers have access to the facetwp_alpha_chars and facetwp_alpha_remove_accents hooks, which allow customizing the displayed alphabet, adding special characters, emojis, or letters from other languages, and even disabling accent removal when exact matching is required. This flexibility makes the extension suitable for multilingual sites and extended alphabets.

By integrating natively with FacetWP's facet system, the A-Z listing works in combination with other facet types such as categories, checkboxes, or sliders, enabling advanced and combined filtering experiences. It is a lightweight solution, with no jQuery dependencies since version 1.3.4, that significantly improves navigation and content discoverability on sites with extensive listings.
